Auberge des Chevaliers Local Area
Auberge des Chevaliers is situated in northern France in the small village of Canlers, not far from the ports of Calais, Boulogne and Dieppe.
Canlers borders the unspoilt area of the "Sept Vallées", seven lush valleys known for their wooded hills, fish-filled streams and quaint farming villages. Depending on how energetic you're feeling, they are perfect for exploring on foot or by car, or you may prefer to cycle or even go pony-trekking!
The area around Canlers has activities on offer to suit holidaymakers of all ages.
Along with walking, cycling and horse riding, you can fish, swim or kayak, play golf or tennis, or even go for an off-road 4x4 tour or go quad biking.
If you enjoy sightseeing, there are relaxing walks along the river at St-Valery-sur-Somme - or you can discover the twisted spire at Verchin and the watermill at Lugy.
Younger guests will love a day out at the "Dennlys" amusement park at Dennebrœucq – and older guests may appreciate a spot of wine-tasting at "Les Caves du Vieux Chai" at Fressin!
The nearest towns to Auberge des Chevaliers are Fruges (5 minutes away), Azincourt (7 minutes away) and Hesdin (20 minutes away).
Fruges has several bars and restaurants, a boulangerie for buying fresh bread (and cakes!), a Carrefour supermarket for general food shopping and a weekly market on Saturday mornings for sampling fresh local produce.
In the opposite direction, the town of Azincourt is smaller than Fruges, but it has a large museum dedicated to the Battle of Agincourt, which took place in a field nearby in 1415. The museum is in the centre of the town and has recently been renovated and updated. Each July, there is an Anglo-French festival and re-enactment to commemorate the famous battle.
Further along the road from Azincourt is the historic town of Hesdin, which hosts the best local market in the area every Thursday morning. The market takes place in the town's central cobbled square, where you'll also find the imposing town hall, lots of interesting shops and a good choice of bars and restaurants. The picturesque River Canche runs right through the centre of the town – and on the outskirts of the town is a forest with some lovely marked walks.
If you fancy a day on the beach, the Opal Coast is under an hour's drive away and has many pretty towns and villages to explore up and down the coastline.
The waterside bars and restaurants at Le Touquet are perfect for lunch, or you may prefer the sandy beaches of Berck-sur-Mer further south, where the annual "International Kite Festival" takes place each April.
On the way to the Opal Coast is Montreuil-sur-Mer, the town where Victor Hugo famously wrote "Les Miserables" – and every summer, a version of "Les Miserables" is performed by local people in the ancient citadelle. The town is known for its narrow cobbled streets and small squares, as well as its impressive medieval fortifications. You can walk all the way around the town on the ramparts for 3km, or can just sit and admire the surrounding countryside from various viewpoints along the way.
